Point of Presence - Sanan Aleskerov

Originally featured in fotoqrafika Issue 09 From the Editor: There are places a person chooses. And then there are places one seems to arrive at gradually — guided by memory, work, observation, and a personal search. For Sanan Aleskerov, that place became Kish. Today, it is home to his house, garden, forest, river, and YER Gallery — a space that grew out of his relationship with the place and with photography.
Inside the Subject, Closer to Nature
The realization that I needed to change my surroundings and my way of life came to me quite a long time ago. I used to watch the photographers who lived in nature, worked independently, and were inside their subject rather than outside it. They didn’t need to travel somewhere or search for something — they simply knew where everything was. It is like a library where you remember which book is on which shelf and can return to it at any moment.

I saw this approach, for instance, in the work of Sally Mann. She lives on her farm and photographed her children, her family, her friends, and the world around her right there. All of it is inseparably connected to nature.
I wanted to change my way of life and move into that kind of environment because the question that concerns me most today is this: how does human culture differ from the world created by nature and God? How are we different, and why does human nature contain this tendency toward self-destruction, while in nature everything is connected to creation, development, and beauty?
Kish was by no means an accidental choice for me. Many years ago, the outstanding artist, designer, and actor Elchin Mammadov invited me to an artists’ symposium. Every September, we would travel not to Kish itself, but a little farther into the forest, where the Filmmakers’ House was located. We looked forward to that trip all year because everything there was simple: we were inside that world.
For me, Kish is a place close to nature, close to something divine.
In Baku, everything was different. To find what I was looking for, I had to break away from my daily affairs and travel to Gobustan, Quba, or other regions of Azerbaijan. I am interested specifically in Azerbaijan — this is the space in which I want to work and search for what I need.
In Kish, however, I no longer need to constantly search. I know what kind of weather I need to photograph a particular piece of architecture, when to head into the forest to visit a familiar tree, or which path to take if I want to find unusual stones. All of this inspires me to work and to measure myself against nature.
From the Urban Rush to Observation
Baku is constant movement, constant change. It is difficult to speak of stability or anything eternal there; everything is constantly transforming. That is why the Baku period of my work was largely connected with the street, with events, with situations unfolding in the here and now.
In Kish, everything is different. Here, you don’t have to chase an event; you can delve into the essence of things: observe why a tree grows the way it does, why it takes on certain forms. Even if you cannot explain it, you can observe it — almost as a scientist observes a process.
For a city dweller, much of nature remains inaccessible. We don’t always understand the life of animals, the forest, the sky, or the river. But here, you can be inside this world: be in the forest, walk along the river, observe the clouds, the plants, or a mountain that is crumbling now and has been crumbling for thousands of years.
At the same time, I don’t entirely agree that one’s eye necessarily becomes dulled by living in one place for a long time. For many years, I walked my dog on Baku Boulevard, and every morning, every evening, every day was different. That doesn’t mean I was always photographing. But I was always observing, thinking, trying to understand. The difference lies elsewhere. The city is a constant rush. Here, there is no rush.
My view of the world around me has indeed become more sensitive and attentive. I was never particularly interested in what was happening somewhere far away. I have always been interested in what is happening right here, around me.
In Kish, that attention has become even sharper. You go out early in the morning and notice that the forest has turned slightly yellow — autumn has arrived, even though it is still the end of August. Or you feel how, on a hot day, the wind becomes a little colder, or the light changes and a slight haze appears. This is not simply observing the weather. It is observing light, density, and surfaces.

YER: A Point on the Earth
YER Gallery is a story of its own. I had already been living in Kish for three years when I came into some money that I didn’t want simply to put in the bank. I thought I should do something with it. Besides, this was something I had been involved in for many years. The Khazar Photo Club, the Baku Arts Center, the Labyrinth group, the House of Photography — working with photography and cultural spaces has always been part of my life. So I thought: why not create my own gallery here?
First and foremost, the gallery was created so that people could see the work. But there is another side to it. Only when photographs hang on a wall and exist as part of a collection can you see your work as a whole. You begin to understand how you worked on it and what you ultimately created.
I have a great deal of material that I wanted to bring to life and show. The gallery became a space where I could not only present my work to others, but also better understand what I had created myself. Many people said to me, “Sanan, what are you talking about? You live at the far end of Kish, so high up — who will come all the way there?” I replied, “I’ll build it, and we’ll see.” And we did. People come, they look — and I think it was done right.
The name came about while the house was being built. I would often call the builders and ask:
— Where are you?
They would answer:
— Yerdəyik, müəllim.
That means: “We are in place.”
Gradually, I realized that YER was precisely that place on earth where I exist, together with everything that surrounds me. It is the point where you are. It is the earth itself. That is how the gallery got its name.
Making the Whole Myself
Curatorship, selecting work — these are all good and beautiful words. But who knows my own work better than I do? What curator, analyst, or art historian?
Of course, I believe that people who analyze and select work are necessary. But I have been doing this myself for many years. I served on the purchasing committee at the Baku Arts Center, headed the artistic council of the Azerbaijan Photographers Union, and founded and curated the House of Photography. For me, this is not a new profession.
At YER, I handle many of the tasks myself because I am accustomed to carrying a project from its initial thought through to the final result — from the idea and the project itself to the text, the exhibition, and the moment when the works are placed on the wall. For now, I am primarily showing my own work. I have accumulated a great deal of material that I need to realize, show to people, and understand for myself.
If, for example, we hold an exhibition of my wife Eva’s work, she naturally decides which works she wants to show. And her opinion matters to me, just as mine matters to her.
I have created a cultural environment here where I feel at ease and where it feels natural to work. Kish is an ancient place; life has continued here for thousands of years, and you can feel that energy. I can work calmly, without rushing, on my projects, collections, and thoughts — on what I have already done and on what I am doing now. Today I am working on a large project about human culture and nature. Two extremes.
A Culture of Seeing and an Open Path
Today, YER has taken on a life of its own. Photographers, architects, artists, specialists, friends, and relatives come here. Some spend a lot of time here, while others may come in and leave after ten minutes. Perhaps not everyone is ready to perceive photography as art.
But the gallery has one important advantage: it allows for direct communication between the viewer and the artist. I am almost always nearby and can, if necessary, tell the story behind a photograph or explain its context.
Although, to be honest, I believe that photography generally does not need to be explained. It needs to be looked at and seen. Felt, or at least approached with the desire to feel it. For that, a culture of seeing is essential. As Olga Sviblova once said, a photographer needs not only a beautiful, keen eye, but a similarly beautiful, perceptive eye on the part of the viewer.
I think that through my work I contribute, in some way, to developing this visual culture. But today I don’t want to engage in education in the conventional sense. I did a great deal of that when I was a teacher. I am more interested in showing what I see and how I see it — and inviting others to look alongside me.
By leaving Baku, I realized my dream. I have a home, a garden, a gallery, and the opportunity to walk up into the forest or down to the river whenever I want. But I am not putting an exclamation mark here. I don’t know what tomorrow will bring. Perhaps, having realized this dream, I will find new plans and new ideas. I want to continue. I want to keep discovering new things.
And I hope that is how it will be.

MÖVCUDLUQ NÖQTƏSİ - Sənən Ələsgərov
Redaktordan: İnsanın seçdiyi məkanlar var. Bir də elə məkanlar var ki, insan ora sanki tədricən — xatirələrin, zəhmətin, müşahidələrin və şəxsi axtarışların sorağı ilə gəlib çıxır. Sənən Ələsgərov üçün belə bir məkan Kiş kəndi oldu. Bu gün burada onun evi, bağı, meşəsi, çayı və YER Qalereyası yerləşir — onun məkana və fotoqrafiyaya olan münasibətindən doğan bir mühit.
Mövzunun içində və təbiətə daha yaxın
Ətrafımı və həyat tərzimi dəyişmək zərurətini kifayət qədər uzun müddət əvvəl dərk etmişdim. Təbiətdə yaşayan, müstəqil çalışan və mövzunun kənarında deyil, elə içində olan fotoqrafların işlərinə baxırdım. Onların harasa getməyinə, nəyisə axtarmağına ehtiyac yox idi — hər şeyin harda olduğunu dəqiq bilirdilər. Bu, hansı kitabın hansı rəfdə olduğunu bildiyin və istənilən an ona qayıda biləcəyin bir kitabxanaya bənzəyir.
Məsələn, Selli Mannın (Sally Mann) işlərində bu yanaşmanı görürdüm: o, öz fermasında yaşayır və övladlarını, ailəsini, tanışlarını, ətrafındakı dünyanı elə oradaca çəkirdi. Bütün bunlar təbiətlə ayrılmaz şəkildə bağlı idi.
Həyat tərzimi dəyişmək və belə bir mühitə keçmək istədim, çünki bu gün məni ən çox düşündürən sual budur: insan mədəniyyəti təbiətin və Yaradanın bəxş etdiyi dünyadan nə ilə fərqlənir? Bizim fərqimiz nədir və nə üçün insanda özünüdağıtmaya meyil var, təbiətdə isə hər şey yalnız quruculuq, inkişaf və gözəlliklə bağlıdır?
Kiş mənim üçün heç də təsadüfi seçim olmadı. İllər öncə görkəmli rəssam, dizayner və aktyor Elçin Məmmədov məni rəssamların simpoziumuna dəvət etmişdi. Hər il sentyabrda biz Kişin özünə deyil, bir az yuxarıya, meşənin içində yerləşən Kinematoqrafçılar evinə gedərdik. Bütün ili bu səfərin intizarı ilə yaşayardıq, çünki orada hər şey sadə idi: biz o dünyanın daxilində idik.
Kiş mənim üçün təbiətə, ilahi olana çox yaxın bir məkandır.
Bakıda hər şey başqa cür idi. İstədiyimi tapmaq üçün işlərimdən ayrılıb Qobustana, Qubaya və ya Azərbaycanın digər bölgələrinə üz tutmalı olurdum. Məni məhz Azərbaycan maraqlandırır — işləmək və axtardıqlarımı tapmaq istədiyim məkan buradır.
Kişdə isə artıq nəyisə daim axtarmağa ehtiyac yoxdur. Müəyyən bir memarlıq abidəsini çəkmək üçün havanın necə olacağını, meşədə hansısa bir ağaca nə vaxt baş çəkməli olduğumu və ya qeyriadi daşlar tapmaq üçün hansı cığırla yürüyəcəyimi dəqiq bilirəm. Bütün bunlar insanı işləməyə və özünü təbiətlə ölçməyə ruhlandırır.
Şəhər tələskənliyindən müşahidəyə
Bakı — daimi hərəkət, daimi dəyişiklikdir. Orada sabitlikdən və ya əbədi bir şeydən danışmaq çətindir, hər şey anbaan dəyişir. Ona görə də yaradıcılığımın Bakı dövrü daha çox küçə ilə, hadisələrlə, anın gətirdiyi situasiyalarla bağlı idi.
Kişdə isə hər şey fərqlidir. Burada hadisənin arxasınca qaçmaq məcburiyyətində deyilsən, əşyaların və varlığın mahiyyətinə varırsan: ağacın niyə məhz bu cür böyüdüyünü, niyə belə formalar aldığını müşahidə edirsən. Hətta bunu izah edə bilməsən belə, sadəcə müşahidə edə bilərsən — sanki bir alim prosesi izləyir.
Şəhər insanı üçün təbiətin bir çox tərəfi əlçatmaz qalır. Biz heyvanların, meşənin, səmanın və ya çayın həyatını həmişə anlaya bilmirik. Burada isə bu dünyanın daxilində ola bilərsən: meşədə olmaq, çay boyunca gəzmək, buludları, bitkiləri və ya min illərdir aşınan və indi də aşınmaqda olan dağı müşahidə etmək mümkündür. Bununla belə, eyni yerdə uzun müddət yaşayanda baxışın, diqqətin “kütləşməsi” fikri ilə tam razı deyiləm. İllərlə Bakı bulvarında itimlə gəzintiyə çıxırdım və hər səhər, hər axşam, hər gün bir-birindən fərqlənirdi. Bu o demək deyil ki, mən həmişə şəkil çəkirdim. Amma həmişə müşahidə edirdim, düşünürdüm, dərk etməyə çalışırdım. Fərq başqa şeydədir. Şəhər — daimi tələskənlikdir. Burada isə tələskənlik yoxdur.
Və biz bunu etdik. İnsanlar gəlir, baxır — zənnimcə, yaxşı bir iş alındı.
Qalereyanın adı evin tikintisi zamanı yarandı. Ustalara tez-tez zəng edib soruşurdum: — Haradasınız? Onlar da cavab verirdilər: — Yerdəyik, müəllim.
Tədricən anladım ki, YER — mənim və ətrafımdakı hər şeyin mövcud olduğu məhz həmin məkandır. Sənin durduğun nöqtədir. Torpağın özüdür. Qalereya adını bu cür aldı.
Bütövlüyü özün yaratmalısan
Kuratorluq, işlərin seçimi — bunlar yaxşı, gözəl sözlərdir. Amma mənim işlərimi özümdən yaxşı kim tanıya bilər? Hansı kurator, analitik, ya sənətşünas?
Əlbəttə, işləri təhlil edən və seçən insanların olması da vacibdir. Lakin mən özüm də uzun illər bu işlə məşğul olmuşam. Bakı İncəsənət Mərkəzinin Satınalma komissiyasında çalışmışam, Azərbaycan Fotoqrafları Birliyinin bədii şurasına rəhbərlik etmişəm, Fotoqrafiya Evini qurmuşam və oranın kuratoru olmuşam. Bu, mənim üçün yeni peşə deyil.
YER-də bir çox məsələləri özüm həll edirəm, çünki işi ilk fikirdən son nəticəyə qədər aparmağa öyrəşmişəm — ideyadan və layihənin özündən tutmuş mətnə, sərgiyə və işlərin divardan asıldığı həmin ana qədər. Hələlik burada daha çox öz işlərimi nümayiş etdirirəm. Reallaşdırmalı, insanlara göstərməli və özüm üçün dərk etməli olduğum zəngin bir material toplanıb.
Əgər, məsələn, həyat yoldaşım Evanın sərgisini təşkil ediriksə, əlbəttə, hansı işləri göstərmək istədiyinə özü qərar verir. Onun rəyi mənim üçün önəmli olduğu kimi, mənim rəyim də onun üçün dəyərlidir.
Burada rahat və təbii şəkildə işləyə biləcəyim mədəni bir mühit yaratmışam. Kiş qədim məkandır, burada min illərdir həyat davam edir və bu enerjini hiss etmək olur. Tələsmədən, sakitcə öz layihələrim, kolleksiyalarım, düşüncələrim üzərində — həm etdiklərim, həm də indi işlədiklərim üzərində çalışa bilirəm. Bu gün insan mədəniyyəti və təbiətə həsr olunmuş böyük bir layihə üzərində işləyirəm. İki qütb.
Görmək mədəniyyəti və açıq yol
Bu gün YER artıq öz həyatını yaşayır. Buraya fotoqraflar, memarlar, rəssamlar, mütəxəssislər, dostlar və qohumlar gəlir. Kimisi burada vaxtını çox keçirir, kimisi isə daxil olub on dəqiqədən sonra çıxır.
Bunun üçün isə görmək mədəniyyəti vacibdir. Olqa Sviblovanın dediyi kimi, təkcə fotoqrafın gözəl və iti gözü bəs etmir, tamaşaçıda da eyni dərəcədə gözəl və duyğulu göz olmalıdır.
Düşünürəm ki, işimlə mən də bu vizual mədəniyyətin formalaşmasına müəyyən töhfə verirəm. Amma bu gün ənənəvi mənada maarifçiliklə məşğul olmaq istəmirəm. Müəllim işlədiyim illərdə bunu kifayət qədər etmişəm. İndi mənə nəyi və necə gördüyümü göstərmək — və başqalarını da mənimlə birgə baxmağa dəvət etmək daha maraqlıdır.
Bakıdan köçməklə arzumu gerçəkləşdirdim. Evim, bağım, qalereyam və istənilən an meşəyə qalxmaq, ya da çaya enmək imkanım var. Lakin mən bunu son nöqtə saymıram. Sabahın nə gətirəcəyini bilmirəm. Bəlkə də, bu arzunu gerçəkləşdirərək yeni planlar və yeni ideyalar tapacağam. Davam etmək istəyirəm. Yeni şeylər kəşf etməyə davam etmək istəyirəm.
Ümid edirəm ki, elə belə də olacaq.
